Saturday, July 18th we had an event at my church that truly was a memorable moment in my life. An organization called Stop Hunger Now hosts these events where people get together and make meal kits for countries that have people that are literally starving to death. Can you imagine that? I could not think of dying because I don't have any food! We are so privileged in this country and to think when I throw away leftovers or something that I don't like that there are people out there that would love to have anything to eat. Here's some more statistics
THE TRUTH ABOUT HUNGER
- Over 960 million people, including one out of seven people in the developing world, suffers from hunger.
- More people die each year from hunger-related causes than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
- More than 25,000 people die of hunger-related causes every day.
- One out of seven people in the developing world suffers from hunger.
- Under nutrition is associated with more than half of all childhood deaths.
- There is enough food in the world to feed everyone 4.3 pounds of food every day.
About 30-40 people joined together on Saturday and joined in on the assembly process that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packets. Each meal cost only 25 cents and the food stores easily, has a shelf-life of five years and transports quickly. In about two hours we had packaged 10,000 meals and each meal fed 6 people.
As I was weighing out the bags, just dropping a few grains of rice made me think, wow, there are some people that would die without just a few grains of rice! I was truly blessed to help in an event that will forever remind me of how grateful and blessed I am.
